Housing History!

So this blog post will probably be 0% interesting to anyone but Max and me but I think it is worth documenting.

As of the end of June, we have lived in this house for 8 months...why is that significant you may ask...During our 4+ years of marriage and 10ish moves we have never lived in a house longer than 8 months at a time. Part of this is because we were living the student life. 8 months of the school year we were in one place and then 4 months of summer we were somewhere else, then there were a whole bunch of extra and somewhat unnecessary moves in between.

Let't take a look at the history...

House #1
 Camarillo California
Lived there for 4 months!

After getting married in May 2009 we settled into this apartment while we worked for Clark Pest Control.
It was a comfortable house that we enjoyed while being away for our first few months of marriage.

House #2 The Studio
Provo UT (the somewhat scary South part of Provo)
Lived there for 8 months.

This was our tiny tiny 200 square foot studio, basement apartment. Our upstairs neighbors were some wild single girls and the house next door was a half-way house. But hey, rent was $375 a month and we had a washer and dryer...We had everything we needed.

House #3
Merced, California
Lived there 4 months

We loved this place, I have some great memories of spending lots of time with Marissa at the pool and the gym and on other various adventures. A proper summer if you ask me.

House #4
Provo UT
1 week.

After coming back from California we were planning on going back to the studio. I got back to Utah before Max because I came from a wedding in Idaho while Max continued to work a couple more days. Within an hour of me being in the house, it seemed the the upstairs shower was leaking into our house. There was also evidence of mold and the new upstairs neighbors were crazier than the last ones. We did not feel comfortable in that house anymore so we set out to find another in the Provo area.

House #5 The Duplex
Provo UT
5 months

We loved the Duplex, it had two large rooms, a washer and dryer inside, a yard with the perfect hammock area, great neighbors, a carport, and a quiet neighborhood. The landlord seemed to be a little shady though, he never really fixed anything. He ended up finding someone to buy the house and offered us a free months rent and some other perks if we moved out. We had a contract until August so we could have stayed but he was excited to sell and felt that the buyers wouldn't buy if we waited until August. We felt that we could make our money stretch further so we went on the apartment hunt again.

House #6
Provo UT
7 months

We found this apartment because it was already in our ward boundaries. We were excited to stay in our same ward which can be difficult when moving a couple streets away in Utah. At the time of moving, this complex only had remodeled units available which cost $50 dollars more per month. We wanted to wait until a non-remodeled appartment was available, but then Max (the salesman) made a deal with the people buying the house we were living in. He said we could move out sooner if they would pay the difference so we can immediately move into a remodeled apartment. They were more than willing to take us up on the offer and just gave us a check that equaled the $50/ month for the months we believed we would remain in Utah. So we got the remodeled apartment for the price of an non-remodeled apartment. We got to enjoy new floors, paint, doors, crown molding, and carpet. We liked living there and sold our contract to our great friends before we left Utah. They are still living there and I hope they are enjoying it.

House #7 Uncle Jay's House
Portland, OR
8 months

After I graduated we moved back to Portland in time for Charlie to be born near family and so Max could finish his schooling online. We lived in Max's uncle's house while he was busy in central Oregon finishing up a second retirement. We were able to take care of his house while we was away, it had started to collect quite a few spider webs. We enjoyed it here and all the perks that came with being in a separate house.

House #8
Roseville, CA
4 months

This was a less painful move because we were able to leave most of our stuff at Uncle Jay's house. We decided to head back to California for one last year of Clark Pest Control. They have been good to us over the years. This was the best house yet that Clark had set us up with. We were excited to have a washer and dryer in the house. I wasn't sure how I would lug Charlie and a whole bunch of laundry to a laundromat. Charlie and I enjoyed his first summer together with frequent trips to the library, pool, and park.

House #9 Uncle Jay's House
Portland, OR
2 months

After California,. we moved back into Uncle Jay's house temporarily while Max worked hard to fix up the house we are living in now. Uncle Jay had since retired so he was back living in his house also.

House #10
Portland OR
9+ Months!!

We are now living in this house after 10 moves and 8 houses. By the time Charlie turned one he had already lived in 3 different houses. We love it here. We are especially loving the yard during the summer time. We still have plenty of projects to keep us busy. Hopefully our upstairs bathroom will be functional in the next month. We also need to carpet our stairs and paint and add doors to our cupboards.
Anyway, we are not planning to move too soon so we are pretty excited about that!

I know that adding pictures would make this post 30% more interesting but we don't have them on our computer right now so I'm not going to add them.

  1. Wow. Look at all the places you've been. To be honest I didn't really read it all I just skimmed through the highlights. LOL
I know I was pretty excited when we had lived in Hawaii longer than anywhere else. Then we moved to Tacoma and have lived here longer than we lived in Hawaii. :-( But we love it here just as much. :-) It just doesn't sound as cool as hawaii. Happy House Staying.
